|
|
Hi,
I'm just moving to a development machine (win XP) so I'm reinstalling all my
software, and I'm wondering whether to try out Eclipse rather than NetBeans
for my java IDE.
My java work is almost entirely server based (mostly servlets) and I really
like fact that with NB you can just press the debug button and have it start
up inside it's built-in tomcat. The main downsides are that I don't find it
as slick or fast in use as any of the microsoft visual studio IDEs, In
particular it seems very slow when single-stepping compared to something
like VB6.
I don't have any interest in running on any playform other than windows, or
on developing GUI apps.
I'd appreciate any comments from people who have used both these IDEs. I see
the IDE as purely a tool so I don't want to try learning a new one for the
sake of it, unless there is a good chance it will be more suitable than the
one I'm running already.
Many thanks
Andy

Have you tried NetBeans 3.6?? I'ts very fast compared to the old 3.x |
branch...
For Eclipse i have used only the Lomboz free plug-in for a small time, but
i'm going back to NetBeans. I think that using only Eclipse free plug-ins,
for now NetBeans is the right choice for the development and deployments of
JSP/Servlets apps.
I like both IDE's, currently i use Eclipse for all my non visual Java
projects, and NetBeans 3.6 for Servlet/JSP development.
Best Regards, Tony

Thanks Tony,
I am still on 3.5 and I must admit I didn't know 3.6 was out - It seems
pretty silly how the "Update Center" feature doesn't even inform you when
there is a new version available.
I'll go with 3.6 on my new PC I think. hopefully the performance
improvements, in conjunction with newer hardware will make it more usable
for me.

Andy,
If you go to the netbeans.org site, somewhere there you can subscribe to
Netbeans announcements.
