| Quote: | You're right that the demand for Swing is not very strong right now,
and HTML/JSP/Servlets still seems to be what everyone is looking for.
I wouldn't necessarily assume, however, that Swing is "on its way
out". My feeling is that GUI clients are going to make a comeback in
the enterprise computing world. I think the whole "thin client"
concept of browser-based apps was oversold and overhyped, and
eventually the people who make the Big Decisions will realize it. For
the past 2-1/2 years, I've done about 85% JSP/Servlet/EJB development
and 15% Swing development, and a lot of the browser-based apps I've
done I think would have been much better if they were done as regular
GUI apps. In many cases there was no compelling reason for them to be
browser-based; they were strictly internal apps running on the local
network.
Now if GUIs make a comeback in the enterprise, it remains to be seen
whether or not Swing is a major player in that area. I certainly hope
that's the case, but VB.NET and C# will give it stiff competition,
without a doubt.

I don't think Swing is a major player for rich clients simply
because it's way too complex and it's more or less controlled by Sun
and thus, you can't fix bugs that have been known for years now and
Sun doesn't bother after all they sell servers not desktops.
If you want to get started in rich clients, check out XUL (XML UI
Language). A good start is the XUL alliance site @

Maybe it is time to state that this is Gerald's standard answer to all
"should I use Swing?" questions. Gerald has a clear agenda in promoting
XUL, and is doing so for some time in this news group. I think of all
his postings in this group there was only one not promoting XUL. It is
beyond me why he is doing this in this newsgroup, and not in an
advocacy group, but hey, this is usenet.
If you want to see many examples of GUIs developed using Swing, see
http://java.sun.com/products/jfc/tsc/sightings/
As for Sun's support of Swing, yes, that could be better. As for the
argument that it is propritary, yes, and so is the Windows GUI, and
almost any GUI system in the world - except lots of the stuff you get
on top of X11 (but many is also propritary, e.g. CD/Motif). And with
the browser war beeing over, a lot of web "GUIs" are also running on a
propritary system (Windows + IE) only.
