I am running a variety of 1.4.2 JVMs on a Windows 2000 v5 sp4 PC with
512M of RAM. I have the Java 1.4.2 (01) sdk installed. I have two
services setup to start up automatically that use java. These use the
-server parameter, use 64M max size (originally set to 128M) and the
ConcMarkSweepGC garbage collector. When these services are running I
am unable to start any other java application including applets within
a web page and also client applications that attach to the servers.
Each of the client applications are set to use 64M VMs and the
incremental garbage collector.

When I stop the services, I am able to start as many client
applications and web applets as I like and can then restart the
services. After this point I am able to start any other clients that I
like (up to the limit of my memory, of course). It seems to be only if
the services are started first.

I have also tried this on Windows 2000 server with 512 memory with the
same problem but when I increase the memory to 768, the problem seems
to go away. I can only guess that there is a conflict with memory or
how the garbage collector operates. I know there are listed bugs java
1.4.2 in regards to garbage collection so I lean a little towards the
second theory.

Is there anyone out there that is experiencing these problems, can
tell me conclusively what is causing the problem and/or provide me
with a work-around. I can live with this but I'd prefer that my
clients don't have this problem.

Regards,

Andrew Wood
