Just out of curiosity, does anyone know if JSPs and other Java-based
technology is used for Amazon's website? I beleive eBay opted for Microsoft
ASP and similar technology, but was always curious about Amazon ... I
especially like their personalization-techniques adopted at the portal, but
was wondering if Java could give the performance that is required for a site
like this.

Any pointers or opinions would be appreciated. Thanks!

Ebay is running on a J2EE backend now:

Amazon seems to use some Apache module.
From http://uptime.netcraft.com/up/graph/?host=amazon.com :

Stronghold/2.4.2 Apache/1.3.6 C2NetEU/2412 (Unix) amarewrite/0.1
mod_fastcgi/2.2.12

I don't know whether this is still correct, but at least once in
a time it's been using a perl-based templating system:

Amazon is a Perl CGI behemoth. Maintenance miracle or genius.
