So now Sun is going to "Open Source" Solaris? Wow. Well, I for one
sure hope it's as "Open" as Java's "Community Process" is!

BAAAAAAAAAHAHAHHAHAHHAAHHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!

BAAAAAAAAAHAHAHHAHAHHAAHHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!

I'm wondering how open Microsoft's process is. The actual
C# *language*, of course, is an international ISO standard,
but how much of the *libraries* qualify therefor?

WinForms in particular is an interesting extension.

Also, WinFX looks like it will replace Win32 sometime soon.
How open is that?

I am hopeful Sun will submit Java 1.5 as an ISO standard,
at some point. Certainly Kaffe will enjoy the spec. :-)

As it is, software is so intangible anyway (what can one do
with a bit?) I'm not sure how much to worry about all this.

It's still legal to go .sigless.

If Sun open-sourced _only_ the Java language spec, JTK would be all over it.
Again, his double standard shows through.

Well, there is that...although I'd still want Java to be open, myself.
Of course part of the J# flap was because Microsoft made mods where
it wasn't supposed to, in the libraries (and then there was the
'delegate' keyword). But that's old news now.

However, that probably generated a good (?) chunk of badwill...

If we're really lucky Java will become open-source and maybe
merge with Python or something. :-)

My experience with the JCP (unlike JTK, I actually have some) is that Sun
bends over backwards not to exert undue influence; the result is that if you
want to participate in an expert group, being a Sun employee is a
disadvantage.

I suspect this was not true for Microsoft employees at ECMA.

ECMA means "European carton manufacturer association".
Oh yes ... ask Google. Cartons are "software" and not hardware.
