|
|
I've been using NetBeans for a few years without ever hitting a major
problem, that is until today.
I'm installing NetBeans 3.6 on a new machine; a hp/compaq running
Win2k SP3, with a 2.6MHz P4 processor (with Hyperthreading), 512Mb RAM
and an Intel Extreme Graphics Card. (no, not an ATI)
When trying to install, the NetBeans installer for Windows gave me the
BSOD twice, so I move on to a zip archive download/install. Now when
I kick off "runidew.exe" the splash screen comes up fine and the
orange progress bar does its thing to the right-hand side, but as soon
as the main window appears the machine pops up the BSOD and reboots.
I wondered if there might be an issue with the JDK version I was using
(1.4.1_05) and hyperthreading, so I upgraded to 1.4.2_04. This has
not made any difference. :-(
Anyone have experience of this before? Anyone got a clue how to fix
it? I'm happy to post more details if that is likely to be helpful.
The downside of this is I'm likely to have to use Eclipse for the
project I'm on if I don't find a solution! (Eclipse runs fine on the
same setup BTW)
Any help or interest very gratefully received.

I don't know, but BSOD is always caused by a device driver bug or faulty
hardware, so it can't be Java or NetBeans. I would get the latest
drivers for the graphics card first.

Thanks for the response Harri. I think you are correct; the fault
seems to be with the driver for the Intel Extreme 2 82865G graphics
card. Unfortunately the latest drivers still do not fix this issue
but I have found a workaround, which is to go to
Start/Settings/Control Panel/Display/Settings/Advanced/Troubleshooting
and then set the slider to the second or third mark from the left.
Moving to the leftmost mark also caused a Blue Screen of Death with
the old drivers, even with no Java running. I've not been enough of a
masochist to check with the new drivers.
Since this is not some kind of gaming rig I'm not too bothered about
losing some 3D optimisations, but YMMV.
