netbeans.org writes that the upcoming version of their IDE (5.5) has now
reached a stage where the developing ends and the testing begins. They
have released RC1, the first version out of beta and (at this time)
closest to the upcoming 5.5 release.

In big lines its basicly NB5.0 with a lot of enhancements:

- Java Enterprise Edition 5 (EE5) support
|- Javadoc and code completion EE5 API's and deployment
| descriptors.
|- Web tier technology updated for EE5 platform: Servlet 2.5,
| JavaServer Pages 2.1, JavaServer Faces 2.1
+- EE5 sample projects to get you quickly started.

- Java Persistance support
|- Generates Java entity classes from existing DB schemes.
|- Creates entity classes in the IDE and lets the server
| generate the DB relying on the DB-from-Java feature in
| Glassfish.
|- The persistance runtime can be used in webapps and plain
| Java apps without the need of an Application Server.
|- Wizzards for creating complete web applications for
| manipulating data in the database using Java Persistance.
|- Updated source editor (code completion, error checking and
| such) with Persistance support.
+- High level user actions that generate common code patterns.
(for example using an Entity Manager).

....and a lot more :)

Another point to note are the so called 'Add-on' packs. These provide
the NetBeans IDE with enhanced support. Up untill now the most well
known were the 'Profiler' and 'Mobility pack' (the first for profiling
your applications, the latter to allow J2ME development). From NB 5.5
and up you can now also use the Enterprise pack and the C/C++ native
development module (this is a java related channel so I only mention
C/C++ here).

The Enterprise pack truly brings Enterprise based development to
Netbeans by adding enhanced support for XML scheme creation, adding BPEL
2.0 support and last but not least: UML modeling support. Although it
is still in beta it runs easily (and safely) with NB 5.5RC1.
