Missed this earlier...looks like Java EE - on top and rising at 45% -
just keeps rolling onwards and eating up VB, while VB continues
rolling down, much like i predicted years ago...

http://www.ddj.com/dept/java/196600578?cid=RSSfeed_DDJ_Java

---------------------------------------------------

Use of Visual Basic has dropped 35% since the spring, says a poll of
more than 430 North American developers done by research company Evans
Data Corp. Developers have abandoned Microsoft's Visual Basic in
droves during the last six months, and they're using Java more than
any other development language, according to a recently published
survey.

Use of Visual Basic has dropped 35% since the spring, says a poll of
more than 430 North American developers done by research company Evans
Data. "Microsoft has dominated languages since the early 90s, but we
are seeing much more parity now," said John Andrews, president of
Evans Data, in a statement. "The use of scripting languages, as well
as Java, appears to have limited VB's future market potential."

Developers aren't only leaving Visual Basic, they're also less likely
to work in the Visual Basic.Net environment; VB.Net use is down 26%,
the survey shows.

Java now holds the top spot, with 45% of the polled developers saying
they used Java during some part of the last six months. C/C++,
meanwhile, was used by 40% of the coders, and C# was used by 32%.

The survey also indicates that use of Ajax, short for Asynchronous
JavaScript and XML, is up 10% since the spring 2006 poll, with 28% of
the developers involved in Ajax-style Web interface development at
some point during the last six months.

VB is dead. Microsoft themselves have been pushing people off it for
years. It's no longer supported and a dead end. It comes as no surprise
that this is true, and should in fact be happening. Big deal.

Further, it's a little disingenuous to count .NET based languages
seperately. They're all part of the same platform. What percent is C#,
C++/CLI and VB.NET as a whole? I'm betting it's more than 45% given that
C# alone is 32%.

What I find more interesting about the survey is what it DOESN'T say. For
example, it says VB.NET has dropped 26%, but doesn't say what VB or
VB.NET's total percentage is, nor does it say how much C# grew, which seems
to indicate that author may be Java biased, and is hiding the likely fact
that VB.NET users are migrating towards C#, or VB6 developers are going to
C# instead of VB.NET.

While I agree that VB is not being pushed, MS is still developing it and it
is still supported.

Uh... yeah. When you still have thousands and thousands of customers
using a product you just can't abandon it overnight.

That's kind of old news.

I think real comparisons are:

Java vs. c#

and

Scripting vs. compiling

Also what about all the former VC++ devs?

Are they still doing VC?

Or c#?

Or did they completely jump ship to java?

Maybe you should talk to some of those VB developers who are really
pissed off at Microsoft, eh? The point is that many have migrated away
from Microsoft because of this. Who's to say that Microsoft won't
suddenly decide to pull the rug on their other sponsored products?
That's the problem with things that are strongly controlled by one
entity.

Btw, how's that Vista launch coming? ROTFLOL....

CompUSA is closing most of its stores and the funniest thing was that
I saw a REALLY BIG pile of Windows Vista boxes lying forlornly, prices
slashed like crazy but still no buyers Wink
