Hi folks,

I have written and documented some utilities (called the "CORBA
Utilities" package) that I find quite useful in my consultancy work and
my employer (IONA) is allowing me to publicly release them. You can
find full details, and download the utilities, from the following URL:

http://www.iona.com/devcenter/corba/utilities.htm

For people who are too lazy to go to the above URL, here is a brief
summary of what is in the CORBA Utilities package:

o A class that simplifies the construction of POA hierarchies.

o A short paper that gives an easy-to-understand explanation of
the "corbaloc" and "corbaname" URLs.

o Utility functions called import_obj_ref() and export_obj_ref()
that allow you to decide at runtime (rather than at development
time) if you want to import/export object references via files,
the Naming Service or some other mechanism.

o A thin portability layer that encapsulates the names of
CORBA-product-specific header files.

o A C++ class library that simplifies synchronization. This library
has no dependency on CORBA (so you can use it in non-CORBA
applications).

o A short paper that provides some useful tips on how to make the
Windows "command" window easier to use.

o Some Tcl scripts that dramatically simplify Orbix administration.

Many of the above issues come up periodically on comp.object.corba.

The utilities have been compiled and tested on Windows 2000 with
Orbix/C++, Orbix/Java, ORBacus/C++ and ORBacus/Java. I think that it
will be quite easy for people to port these utilities to other operating
systems and/or CORBA products.

Regards,
Ciaran.

Are these for Windoze only? I notice that:

1) Its a winzip file, not a compressed tarball
2) the files are all DOS-ified
3) pathnames use '' as the delimiter, not '/'

Any chance of a POSIX release?

Unfortunately, I have easier access to Windows than UNIX machines so the
Makefiles in the distribution are Windows-specific. I do plan on producing
UNIX Makefiles at some stage, but I have more urgent things to work on so
this may take a while. Of course, if you would like to hack some UNIX
Makefiles together and email them to me then that would be appreciated:-)

By the way, the various utilities *have* been compiled on Solaris at
some stage in the past, so I am confident that the source code is portable.
It is just the Makefile system that needs to be ported.

Regards,
Ciaran.
