Is there a way to install both 1.4 and 1.5 and flip between
them? I hope there are just a few environmentals to
redefine.

There may be other ways to do it, better suited to your needs, but..
You can use two .jnlp (WebStart) files to launch classes with either
1.4 (or 1.4.2_06, or 1.4+) or 1.5.
